I want an IR converted digital camera, bad!
However, I still have more useful things on my purchase list - most notably
a new tripod & head. So, I have to fake the IR effect in Photoshop for
now. I’ve tried to imitate the effect of IR shooting on more
than one occasion and despite those efforts, this is the first worthy
attempt. I suspect it had a lot to do with all the greens in the digital
negative. Regardless, I love the image. I’m not a huge fan of overly digitally
processed images, but I will certainly make an exception here.
Technical Details: 1/60 sec at f/10 - 12-24mm lens at 24mm -
RAW ISO 400 - Pixelroom IR effect
The hardest part of making this image was finding the camera vantage point.
I hiked a good part of the edge of this river, trying to find a spot that
matched the vision I had in my mind. After finding it, the rest of the
process was easy… f/10 for good depth of field without diffraction problems,
a decent shutter speed for the wind at hand (hence the ISO bump) and a
simple matrix metering. I processed this image in color initially with
excellent results. Later, I decided an infrared approach might better
illustrate the ‘dreamy’ aspect of the scene. After a little Photoshopping,
I ended up with an image that I like so much more than the original, I’ve
abandoned the later completely.
