I love taking snaps of kids. Prior to having a
child of my own, I enjoyed the benefits provided by five nieces, all of whom
enjoy having their picture taken. Their individuality and expressiveness
are inspiring, and the wealth of images they offer is never ending. I
don’t have favorites, of course, but I do share a special bond with Chloe,
as she is my goddaughter. Of all of the images I have made of her through
the years, this one remains my favorite. The soft light and warm glow of
the image matches her personality perfectly.
Technical Details: 1/30s at f/5.6, 17-55mm lens at
38mm, pixelroom 'antiquing', RAW ISO 400
This picture was taken during a birthday party for another one of my
nieces. As the action happens fast, I photograph birthday parties with
almost a sports-like mentality. The camera is on continuous focus and
advance, aperture priority and a little ISO boost to help out. For candids,
I often choose a ‘medium’ aperture, f/5.6 in this case as it is the optical
best for the lens in use, and drag the shutter a bit to grab some ambient
light in the background. Chloe is lit with a softened, bounced flash.
