I am fortunate to live near the coast of Lake
Michigan. The sunsets are stunning, especially in the winter months. Every
March we seem to get a series of days that look much warmer than they feel -
as if Mother Nature is offering a prodding glimpse of the spring to come. I
have shot many winter images of the life guard stations overlooking the
frigid beach and waters. I can't help but think they too await the coming
spring and the end of their solitary interlude.

Getting the correct exposure with the sun in the frame can be tough.
Frequently, Nikon's matrix meeting fails me in these situations. For this
image, I had to dial in a +2/3rds exposure compensation to record the image
properly. In the pixelroom, I opened up the shadows on the beach and
applied a standard amount of sharpening. I elected not to correct the lens
distortion or flare in the final image, as they help richen an already
pensive image.
